History

In February 1969 approximately 30 concerned citizens of the Dawn – Lorne area met at Derby’s Restaurant to discuss organizing a volunteer fire department for the area.  In March 1969 a third meeting was held.  At this time a motion was made that the fire department be called Frog Level Volunteer Fire Department.  Frog Level was a name given to the region around Haley’s Corner – Dawn area which is primarily where the department sits today.  At this meeting a slate of officers were presented and approved.  In April 1969 a $1000 was put into the Caroline County budget for it support towards our new department.  T. Nelson Haley donated the land to the department.  Construction of the building was now on its way.  All of the work on the firehouse was all volunteer labor.  The first phase of the building was a 50’ x 60’ one story with 3 bays capable of housing six units.  The Frog Level Volunteer Fire Department was officially in service on August 1, 1969. They temporarily housed their equipment at Haley Excelsor Mill until their building was complete.  Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department loaned them their first piece of equipment which was a 1947 Ford Pumper. They answered their first call on August 4th.  The department answered 58 call its first year in service.  The siren that was used to alert firemen there was a call, before pagers were used is still being used by the department today.                                                                         October 31, 1970 marked a great day in the Dawn area.  It was the official opening of the new section of Rt. 30 which extended west of Rt. 301 to the Hanover County Line.  It was also the 1st Annual Frog Level Fall Festival and Parade.  Alden Aarow of WRVA was the  parade marshal.  Brunswick stew, hot dogs, homemade pies and cakes were enjoyed by all.

In 1985 the department answered 140 calls for that year.  By February 1986 they decided it was time to add the second story to the station which would consist of a recreation room, lounge, television, and office.

Over the past years the department has done many fundraisers to help with the cost of purchasing new apparatus and equipment. Even though this is a volunteer organization our members put in many long hours to make sure our department will be ready when called.

Just recently the department purchased 5 additional acres of land that joins the current property.  We are in the process now of expanding our current building so that will accommodate our growing needs.  We may be a volunteer organization be we are working hard to keep up with the demands of growth in our little town of Frog Level.
